Roxhill Rox!

We dig our neighborhood! There is a great mix of people, kids, businesses, parks, and pets. We're going to give you the lowdown and let you know how the other half live (no not that half, the OTHER other half).

Help Determine a New Park in Westwood - April 30th

Per the Westwood Neighborhood Council:

Original link: http://groups.google.com/group/WestwoodNeighborhood/browse_thread/thread/01e22954334997fa#

Chip Nevins of the Seattle Parks Department will be coming to speak to our neighborhood in regards to Parks and Green Spaces Levy that was passed in 2008.

"In 2008 the citizens of Seattle passed a Parks and Green Spaces Levy that is providing ~ $146M for a variety of Park projects throughout the City.  The projects range from acquisition of new park land in underserved neighborhoods to the renovation of existing parks to the restoration of our urban forests.  One aspect of the Levy is the acquisition of neighborhood parks within 20 underserved areas as identified in the Levy. The Westwood Urban Village is one of the areas named in the Levy. Parks is interested in working with the community to learn where park investments can have the greatest impact."

We will have an initial meeting at the Southwest Community Center2801 Southwest Thistle StreetApril 30th at 1pm The meeting will not only be to hear about the Levy, but to identify your preferences for a park in the "Urban Village" area of the Westwood and Highland Park Neighborhoods. I have attached a map of this area. Feel free to come and identify your concerns about the neighborhood and what other improvements we can work together on. There is a celebration at another new park - Myrtle Reservoir Park - happening that morning to inspire you to what the Westwood Park can be. Please see the picture.

Check out Cafe Osita

Hey, Gang --

I am so excited that Locol will be opening any day now, and I hope to see you there! There is another fantastic place to stop in for a bite to eat. Have you checked out Cafe Osita? It's the shop just up from Webster on 35th, next to the laundromat. They had a rough start last year, but now they have a new owner and MUCH better coffee. They're serving from a local roaster called Seven and it is great stuff. Drop by and say hi to Andrea. She is a great neighbor!

Kenyon Hall rentals

Hi, Gang --

I just learned the Kenyon Hall is available for event rentals.  That means the next time you have a party that gets bigger than your house, or you agree to host your sister's baby shower with ALL her friends from high school -- you can now send everyone around the corner to our favorite neighborhood venue!

The space is great for parties and gatherings.

Just contact Lou kenyonhall@earthlink.net  to learn more and to book a time for your next event!

We are Thankful for Great Neighbors and a Great Neighborhood!

64th All-West Seattle Comunity Pancake Breakfast

    From the Westwood Neighborhood Council:
    Information Contact:

Warren Lawless. 206-938-8032

The annual West Seattle Community
Pancake Breakfast will be carrying on a tradition that is looked forward to by a
growing number of adults and kids. It seems they look forward to renewing
long-standing friendships and making new ones. For the 64rd year, the
event will be sponsored by Kiwanis. At the club’s weekly booth at the
Junction Farmers market, members are being asked, “When’s the Pancake
Breakfast?’

For the
record, it’s always the first Saturday morning of December – this year, it’s
December 4. “As usual, we’ll be at the Alki Masonic Building, 4736
40th Ave. S.W. “Breakfast will be ready at 7 a.m. and we’re
closing at 11 a.m.,” Dr. Steve Leifheit, breakfast chair
announced.

Loyal
patrons claim, “THE CAKES ARE GREAT! “They ought to be,” chimed West
Niver, president of the sponsoring West Seattle Kiwanis Club; “we’ve been making
them for over 63 years. The recipe is so treasured, Sig Staaksted, who
traditionally mixes the batter, keeps the recipe in his
billfold.”
.
Kiwanis is a
“hands-on” service organization. “However,” declared Niver, “it still
takes some financial resources to support helping young kids, teens and adults
who are facing stiff challenges these days. Our time-honored assistance to
schools and youth organizations requires funding, as well. “By supporting
this event, generous folks help us meet those needs,” Niver
concluded.

Tthe
breakfast also will provide an opportunity for patrons to donate new, unwrapped
“Toys for Tots.” Marine reservists will be on hand to accept the
toys.

Children to
12, accompanied by an adult, will be offered a free photo with
Santa.

Adult
donations are $5 each ($6 at the door) and kids, to 12, $3. Mail
orders may be sent to PO Box 16128, Seattle, WA 98116. Phone inquiries
will be received at 206-938-8032.

Snow Rox!

Yep snow in November! Nothing like a little Winter Wonderland for Thanksgiving.

Have fun out there and be careful!

Is Roxhill Ready for Snow?

Snow_plows

Cliff Mass has a great post about snow.

This caught my eye:
"Finally, there is an important element of personal responsibility. Moving your car down the hill is one. Having a snow shovel and some salt/deicer is another. Some neighborhoods (like mine) are planning to have a large supply of deicer to take on the worse street sections in our area. Sort of like the snow version of the block watch program. "
